Easy, Low-Cost Kikuyu Lawn Conversion — Delivered to Your Door
Zero preparation required. Transform your tired old lawn or patch up bare areas the smart way. No need to knock out or remove existing lawn — saving time, money, and unnecessary labour. Simply plug and forget.
Kikuyu turf is a popular and economical choice for residential lawns, school grounds, and sports fields. As a warm-season variety, it flourishes in hot, sunny conditions and is renowned for its aggressive growth habit (via both above-ground runners and deep rhizomes), allowing it to establish quickly and repair damage almost before your eyes.
Key Benefits
- 💪 Exceptional Durability — withstands heavy foot traffic from kids and pets
- 💧 Excellent Drought Tolerance — deep root system reduces watering needs once established
- 🔄 Quick Recovery — damage is rapidly filled in for a consistent, lush appearance
- 🟢 Vibrant Colour — bright, attractive green throughout the warmer months
- ✅ Zero prep required — plant straight into existing lawn or bare soil
- 🚚 Delivered to your door — fresh, healthy plugs ready to plant on arrival
Coverage
- Planting rate: 6–10 plugs per m²
- 100 plug tray covers: approx. 10–16m²
- For faster coverage, plant at 10 per m². For a more economical spread, plant at 6 per m² and allow more time to fill in.
Best Time to Plant
Plant from late September through to April when conditions are warm enough for establishment. Kikuyu establishes fastest in warm conditions with regular watering.
How to Plant
- Mow existing lawn short if planting into an established area
- Use a plug tool, trowel, or drill auger to create holes at your chosen spacing
- Insert each plug firmly into the hole so the crown sits level with the soil surface
- Water thoroughly immediately after planting
- Keep moist for the first 2–3 weeks until plugs are established
- Fertilise 4–6 weeks after planting to encourage spreading
Kikuyu performs best in full sun on well-drained, fertile soil. While its vigorous growth requires regular mowing during peak season, its resilience and low-maintenance nature make it an incredibly practical and cost-effective choice.
