Why Winter is the Best Time to Plan Your Lawn Renovation
Share
Most Australians think lawn care stops in winter. The grass is dormant, the mornings are cold, and the backyard gets ignored until the weather warms up. But here's the thing — winter is actually the smartest time to plan your lawn renovation. And the homeowners with the best-looking lawns in spring? They started planning in July.
Your Lawn is Dormant — But You Don't Have to Be
When warm-season grasses like Kikuyu and Couch go dormant in winter, growth slows right down. That's not a problem — it's an opportunity. With no mowing pressure and less foot traffic, winter is the perfect window to:
- Assess bare patches, thin areas, and weed pressure
- Test your soil and address pH or nutrient deficiencies
- Plan which grass variety suits your climate and usage
- Forward order seed or plugs for big jobs so you're ready to go the moment temperatures rise
Getting this groundwork done now means you can hit the ground running when planting season arrives.
Choosing the Right Grass for Your Climate
Not all grasses are created equal, and choosing the wrong variety is one of the most common (and costly) lawn mistakes. Winter gives you time to research properly.
Kikuyu Seed & Plugs — Fast-growing and hard-wearing, Kikuyu thrives in warm to temperate climates. Ideal for high-traffic areas like backyards with kids or pets, it establishes quickly once soil temperatures are right. Available as seed or plugs — plugs are a great option for large areas or commercial jobs where you want faster establishment.
Dominator Couch Grass™ Seed & Plugs — OzGrass's premium couch variety — fine-leafed, drought-tolerant, and perfect for homeowners and turf professionals who want a dense, lush lawn with excellent wear recovery. Dominator Couch Grass™ is a favourite across Australia for both residential and commercial projects. Available as seed or plugs, making it easy to forward order for large-scale jobs.
Cool Season Varieties — Don't want to wait until October? OzGrass also stocks cool season grass seed varieties that can be planted year-round, so you can get growing even in the cooler months. Perfect for southern states or shaded areas where warm-season grasses struggle.
Pasture Blends — Got a larger property, acreage, or rural block? Our pasture blends are designed for broad-acre applications and are available for year-round planting depending on your region and rainfall.

Plan Your Soil Prep Now
Even the best grass seed won't perform in poor soil. Winter is the right time to:
- Test your soil pH — most lawn grasses prefer a pH of 6.0–7.0
- Aerate compacted areas — especially high-traffic zones
- Top dress with quality soil or compost to improve structure ahead of planting
- Address drainage issues before spring rains arrive
Doing this prep work in winter means your soil is ready and waiting when planting season begins.

When Should You Actually Plant?
Warm-season grasses (Kikuyu, Dominator Couch Grass™) require a soil temperature of at least 18–19°C for reliable germination and establishment. In most parts of Australia, that means the ideal planting window is October through to February. Planting outside this window risks poor germination and slow establishment.
Cool season varieties and pasture blends can be planted year-round in many regions, making them a great option if you want to get started sooner or maintain green coverage through the cooler months.
Not sure what soil temperatures are doing in your area? Your local Bureau of Meteorology site publishes soil temperature data by region.
