When to Plant Kikuyu in Australia — State by State Guide

Plant at the right time and you'll have a lush, established lawn before summer hits. Here's your state by state guide to planting Kikuyu in Australia.

What Kikuyu Needs to Establish

Before diving into timing, it's worth understanding what Kikuyu actually needs to thrive:

• Soil temperature of at least 18–19°C — this is the most important factor. Air temperature can be warm but if the soil hasn't caught up, germination will be slow and patchy
• Full sun — Kikuyu loves sun and will struggle in heavily shaded areas
• Well-drained soil — it doesn't like sitting in water
• Consistent moisture during establishment — especially for the first 4–6 weeks after planting seed

Kikuyu Seed vs Plugs — Which is Right for You?

When to Plant Kikuyu — State by State

Queensland (QLD)

Kikuyu can be planted from September through to March across most of Queensland. In far north QLD, soil temperatures warm earlier and you may be able to plant from August. Avoid planting during the wet season if drainage is an issue.

New South Wales (NSW)

The ideal planting window in NSW is October through to February. Coastal areas warm up faster than inland and tablelands regions, so check your local soil temperature before planting. Sydney and surrounds are typically ready from mid-October.

Victoria (VIC)

Victoria has a shorter warm window. Aim for November through to January for best results. Melbourne and surrounds typically reach the required soil temperature from late October/early November. Avoid planting too late in summer as heat stress can affect establishment.

South Australia (SA)

In SA, the planting window is generally October through to February for warmer regions. Adelaide and surrounds are typically ready from October. Please note: Kikuyu plugs are not available for delivery to SA — seed only.

Western Australia (WA)

Unfortunately we are unable to ship Kikuyu seed or plugs to Western Australia due to biosecurity restrictions. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT)

The ACT has cold winters and warm summers. Aim for November through to January when soil temperatures are reliably above 18–19°C.

How to Check Your Soil Temperature

Don't guess — soil temperature is the key to successful Kikuyu establishment. You can:

• Use a soil thermometer (available at most hardware stores) — measure at 5–10cm depth in the morning
• Check the Bureau of Meteorology website for soil temperature data by region
• As a rough guide, soil temperature usually lags 2–4 weeks behind air temperature in spring
